Go Green for Spring

by | |

Spring is a time for rejuvenation and reinvention. You’re already spring-cleaning your house and sharpening those lawn mower blades, but what about your environmental efforts? This is a great time to put some thought into becoming more environmentally friendly. You might be surprised at how easy it can be to make a big difference with something as simple as your coffee routine.

Reusable Coffee Cups

According to ecopedia.com (http://www.ecopedia.com/environment/reusable-coffee-cups-a-simple-step-for-a-huge-impact/), one disposable coffee cup per day results in 23 lbs of waste a year. That’s a huge impact you can have just by using a reusable cup every day. If everyone used a reusable cup it could save an estimated 16 BILLION cups per year (Click for source). Reusable coffee cups keep coffee warmer longer than paper cups without burning your hand, reducing the need for a coffee clutch that just increases the environmental footprint of your favorite beverage. Plus, they are a great way to express your personality.

Coffee Grounds

Don’t throw those coffee grounds in the trash! The nutrient rich grounds can do wonders for your garden, especially acid loving plants like tomatoes or roses! You can make a homemade fertilizer by mixing 2 cups of grounds to 5 gallons of water. Let it sit overnight and then add directly to plants. Having ant or cat problems in the garden? Dry out the grounds and add them directly around the plants attracting the pests. Is your thumb more black than green? Talk to your neighbors. They might love to have your grounds!

Upcycled K-Cups

Making a package that preserved the freshness of coffee while also being recyclable has been a huge challenge for the coffee industry. While they are working to find a permanent solution, there are all kinds of things you can do with used K-Cups besides throwing them away. For instance, they make great containers to spout those garden seeds. Once you’ve emptied out the grounds, fill with potting soil and the seeds you are ready to spout. The hole made by the Keurig brewers allows water to drain while the built in filter keeps the soil from draining out with the water. With a little creativity, the uses are endless!
